     Ronald Dean “Ronnie” Mullins, age 70, of Jackhorn, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at his residence.  He was born on January 18, 1948 in Jenkins, Kentucky to the late Darwin andOta Mullins.  Mr. Mullins was a member and deacon of the Hemphill Baptist Church.  He was also a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

    He was also preceded in death by his wife, Glenda Alice Mullins; a daughter-in-law, Kim Mullins; three sisters: JoycePage, Yvonne Miller and Madonna Mullins; three brothers: Burr Mullins, Den Mullins and Clifford Mullins.

   Mr. Mullins is survived by two sons: Dean Mullins of Whitesburg, Kentucky and Dow (Jen) Mullins of Cowan, Kentucky; sixgrandchildren: D.J. Mullins, Matthew B. Mullins, Bradley R. Mullins, Autumn L. Mullins, Ava A. Mullins and Scarlett G. Mullins; one great granddaughter: Arabella Kinzley; one sister, Loretta Meade ofRockhouse, Kentucky ; three brothers: Ellis Mullins(Arta) of Baltimore, Maryland, J.C. Mullins(Mickey) of Baltimore, Maryland and Mike Mullins(Pam) of Jackhorn, Kentucky; along with  a host ofother family and many friends to mourn his passing.

  Visitation for Mr. Mullins will be held at the Hemphill Baptist Church on Thursday, December 27, 2018, with family viewing at3:00 PM.  Public visitation will begin at 5:00 PM.  Also visitation will be held throughout the day on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the church.

   Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 1:00 PM from Hemphill Baptist Church with Pastor DannyHurst officiating.

   Interment will follow in the Thornton Cemetery at Thornton, Kentucky.

      Barbara Jean Kegan Belcher, 86, of Rockville, MD. passed from this world of heart failure on Nov. 5th, 2018.
      Barbara, born in Jenkins, KY. in 1932, daughter of Seth H. Kegan, Sr. & Margaret Nicholson (Kegan), was married in 1954 to Curtiss  Belcher, Sr. of Burdine,KY. until his death in 1997.
       She is survived by one brother, Seth Kegan, Jr.(Alice) of Jenkins, KY., three sons, Roger A. Belcher (Dena), Thomas Belcher & Curtiss Belcher, Jr.(Kimberly)and one daughter Sarah Jane Proctor (William) and a host of grandchildren, brothers & sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews & cousins. She was preceded in death by one son, John M Belcher (Tammy)and one sister, Betty Polly (Wayne).
        After receiving her degrees in music and literature from U.K. she taught piano for many years in KY. and MD. and directed/played piano for her churches'choir in KY  & MD.  and in her later years she enjoyed painting, opera and caring for her "end of trail" rescue dogs.
          Barbara also volunteered for over a decade as the ticket sales director for the Rockville City Ballet and helped with costumes as well. She wasalso the musical director for the City of Rockville theatre program and she co-authored (with Jean Edwards) the official city of Rockville March. And in the early 70's she co-founded and accompaniedthe Rockville City Choir.
          Barbara also gladly helped her grandchildren with college expenses thrilling in their accomplishments or completions from theirschooling.
         Memorial service will be held at 11: 30 AM on Dec. 15th, 2018 at Polly & Craft Funeral Home in Jenkins, KY. with procession to Wilson Cemetery inElkhorn City to follow.

   Doris Ilene Stallard, age 85, of  Norton, Virginia(formerly of Jenkins, Kentucky) passed from thislife  on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at her home in the Laurels of Norton, Virginia. She was born on September 27, 1933 at Cromona, Kentucky.  Mrs. Stallard was a member of the Jenkins FirstBaptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.  She was an avid quilter and enjoyed making them for her family.  She also made dresses for needy children of the world through theministry of Operation Christmas Child. 

   She was the daughter of the late Henry Clayton and Rebecca Brewer Anderson.  She was also preceded in death by herhusband, Charles D. Stallard; four brothers and by three sisters.

     Survivors include one son, Charles D. Stallard II of Glendale, California; one daughter, Sharra Kegan(Ross) ofDryden, Virginia; two grandchildren: Laura Catherine Kegan of Lexington, Kentucky and Jonathon Kegan(Jordan) of Mint Hill, North Carolina; one brother, Huey Anderson(Peggy) of Huntsville, Alabama;one sister-in-law, Nagatha Anderson of Burdine, Kentucky; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn her passing.

 

   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church(14th East11th Street North   Big Stone Gap, Virginia 24219) for the ministry of Operation Christmas Child.

    Michael Wayne Mullins, age 58, of  Jenkins, Kentucky passed from this life  on Sunday,November 25, 2018. He was born on October 10, 1960 at Payne Gap, Kentucky. Mr. Mullins was dedicated to his family and community.  He was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed his work.

   He was the son of the late Arthur and Ramona Lee Tucker Mullins.  He was also preceded in death by one brother, RickyMullins.

    Shirley Ann Calhoun, age 72, of  Jenkins, Kentucky passed from this life  on Sunday, November 18,2018 at the Pikeville Medical Center of Pikeville, Kentucky. She was born on February 20, 1946 at Burdine, Kentucky.  Mrs. Calhoun was a longtime member of the Burdine Church of God of Prophecyand had served throughout the years as a Sunday school teacher and a praise team member.  She liked birdwatching and gardening.  She also loved to spend time with her family.

   She was the daughter of the late Delman Calvin and Nettie Hunt Ratliff.   She was also preceded in death by herhusband, Dixon “Dick” Calhoun; two sisters: Edith Ellis and Gladys Bryant; two brothers: Vondall Ratliff and George Ratliff.

   She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Maryland Johnson Bentley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, HowardCollins; three sisters: June, Cindy and Dexter; three brothers: Cecil, J.P. and Rufus Bentley.

She was born on May 14, 1946 at Clintwood, Virginia.  Mrs. Bentley was a memberof the People’s Fundamental Baptist Church of Dunham.

   She was the daughter of the late Hubert and Gertrude Mullins .   She was also preceded in death by her husband,Harold Bentley; one daughter, Sharon Henson; one sister, Geraldine Collins; five brothers: Samuel Mullins, Freddie Mullins, Johnny Mac Mullins, Russell Joe Mullins and Henry Mullins.

     Survivors include two sons: Lloyd Pigg of Jenkins, Kentucky and Freddie Mullins of Washington; one sister,Louise Mullins Stanley(Hobert) of Wise, Virginia; three brothers: Harold Mullins(Violet) of Jenkins, Kentucky, Emory Mullins(Jennie) of Jenkins, Kentucky and David Mullins(Belva) of Jenkins,Kentucky; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn her passing.

   Ernest Wright, Jr., age 63, of  Jenkins, Kentucky passed from thislife  on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at his residence. He was born on December 25, 1954 at Fleming, Kentucky.  Mr. Wright was a Christian, die-hard Kentucky Fan and enjoyed NASCAR. He loved togarden and often shared from it with others.  Many viewed him as a hero.

    He was the son of the late Ernest Wright and the surviving Lavada Rose Wright.  He was also preceded in death by onebrother, Ricky Wright and by one infant grandson.

   Other than his mother, survivors also include his wife of eleven years, Lillia June Wright; two daughters: Crystal WrightFacello(David) of Pound, Virginia and Ashley Wright(Randall) of Pound, Virginia; one son, Mark Wright(Candice) of Wise, Virginia; three stepchildren: Florence Kay Deets(Roger)  of Pound,Virginia, Neakema Ruth Deets of Pound, Virginia and Shawn Christopher Sturgill of Crossville, Tennessee; three grandchildren: Bryson, Dawson and Brittany; six step grandchildren: Haley, Landon,Logan, Matthew, Hannah and Aiden; two great grandchildren: Coby and Noah; two sisters: Lynn Bentley of Payne Gap, Kentucky and Tammy Triplett(Roy) of Jenkins, Kentucky; two brothers: Luther Wright ofPayne Gap, Kentucky and Tim Wright of Jenkins, Kentucky; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn his passing.

   Deborah Kay Addington Benge, age 65, of  Seco, Kentucky passedfrom this life peacefully as she was surrounded by her loving family on Monday, October 22, 2018 at her residence. She was born on January 19, 1953 at Leatherwood, Kentucky.  Mrs. Benge servedas a Whitesburg City Councilwoman and as a volunteer dispatcher for the Whitesburg Fire Department.  She was well-known and greatly loved by all who knew her.

   She was the daughter of the late Joel M. and Ava Mae Baker Addington.   She was also preceded in death by onesister, Saundra Hope Carmichael; three brothers: Jesse Ray Addington, Tommy Warren Addington and Ronnie Wayne Addington .

   Survivors include her loving husband of fourty-eight years, Roy Earl Benge; two daughters: Shawna Kay Rodenberg(David) ofEvansville, Indiana and Misti Jo Torrey(David) of Seco, Kentucky; one sister: Linda Jo Hampton of Richmond, Kentucky; eight grandchildren: Clara(Joshua), Ezra, Stella, Madeline, Joshua, Gustav, Caleband Norah; one expectant great grandson, Asa; along with a host of other family and many friends to celebrate her life.

  James Terry Richard Braddock, age 69, of  Jenkins, Kentucky passedfrom this life  on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was born on February 9, 1949 at Payne Gap, Kentucky. Mr. Braddock served on the Jenkins SchoolBoard and Jenkins City Council.  He was also a strong supporter of the Jenkins athletics program.  Terry was very proud of his Italian heritage.

   He was the son of the late James and Iona Orender Braddock.  He was also preceded in death by one sister, BarbaraBullion and by one brother, Morris Braddock.

  Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth May Collins(Shelton) of Tacoma, Virginia; two sons: William Terry Braddock of Wise,Virginia and Paul Braddock(Jennifer) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; two sisters: Linda Braddock Cumberland(Jim) of Jenkins, Kentucky and Brenda Braddock of Jenkins, Kentucky; three grandchildren: HattieMeade, Nicholas Braddock and Taylor Braddock ; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn his passing.

   She was the daughter of the late Noah S. and Willie Mae Kelly Mullins.   She was also preceded in death by herhusband, David Melvin Hughes; two sisters: Audrey Mullins and Melstra Mullins; two brothers: Homer Mullins and James Mullins.

     Survivors include one daughter: Karen King (Hugh) of Lexington, Kentucky; one son: Kenneth Hughes of Lexington,Kentucky;one sister: Eldra Dean Hayes of Jenkins, Kentucky; two grandchildren: Mason King of California and Bailee King of Lexington, Kentucky; along with a host of other family and many friends tomourn her passing.

   Doyle Begley, age 77, of  Jenkins, Kentucky passed from thislife  on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at his residence. He was born on April 10, 1941 at McRoberts, Kentucky. Mr. Begley was a veteran of the United States Air Force.  He was a retiredaccounting clerk of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

   He was the son of the late Henry and Nell King Begley.  He was also preceded in death by one sister, Donna Yonts andby one brother, Ernest Begley.

    

  Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Anna Gayle Keaton Begley of Jenkins, Kentucky; two daughters: Jill (Mark) Collinsof Elkton, Kentucky and Jerri Begley of Jenkins, Kentucky; one sister, Phyllis (Doug) Meade of Abingdon, Virginia; five grandchildren: Erica (Chris) Driskill, Christopher (Savannah) Begley, ChaseCollins, Garret Collins and Jonathon Branham; three great grandchildren: Gage Driskill, Leah Begley and Bryson Begley; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn hispassing.

    Mayor Robert “Pud”Shubert, age 80, of Jenkins, passed from this life at Whitesburg, Kentucky early on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Free from pain and discomfort, he is finally well.  He now rejoins muchfamily and many friends in his heavenly home.

    Mr. Shubert was born on April 1, 1938 atJenkins, Kentucky to the late Walter Clyde and Alma Fairchild Shubert. He was also preceded in death by one brother: Walter Shubert, Jr. and by one sister: Mary Lou Kurtz. 

   He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eightyears, Lana Narramore Shubert;  three daughters: Sherry (G.C.) Kincer of Jenkins, Kentucky, Jill (Layton) Johnson of Carlsbad, New Mexico, and Mitzi (Tony) Whited of Pikeville, Kentucky; fivegrandchildren: Robert, Lana Paige, Lauren, Johnny and Kristen; one great grandson: Kenyon. He was a proud Marine, skilled electrician and a pioneer of the cable television industry.  He was agreat public servant and businessman. There is an amazing host of family and friends that have been greatly influenced by the health battle  that Pud fought for so long. He was a fighter and fought until the last day the Lord gave him on this earth.

   Among his accomplishments, Robert was a veteranof the United States Marine Corps, served as a board member of Jenkins Independent School System, Jenkins City Councilman, former board chairman of K.R.A.D.D., member of the Kentucky League of CitiesExecutive Board of Directors. He also served the longest tenure of anyone as mayor of  the City of Jenkins. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was a strong and successful advocate tomake Jenkins a better place for the young and the old.

    The Lord has blessed our family throughthis man. Today we celebrate the life and accomplishments of Robert Pud Shubert, who leaves behind a host of loving family, several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was born on September 16, 1951 at Fleming-Neon, Kentucky and he was a lifelongresident of Letcher County. Mr. Vanover owned and operated Vanover’s Garage, of Neon, for the past twelve years.

   He was the son of the late Earl and Loretta Flanary Vanover.  He was also preceded in death by one brother: RogerVanover.

Born in Jenkins, KY, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Margie Ball Miller. Mrs. Janice was a graduate of Jenkins High School in Kentucky. She was a member ofBennettsville First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Janice was a retired Medical Clerk with Drs. Howell and McAlpine.

She enjoyed her home and yard. She loved her family dearly.

He also had an avid love ofnature.

   He was the son of the late Lester and Bessie Sexton Gilley.  He was also preceded in death by his three sisters:Virginia Childers, Patricia Rowe and Paula Altrip.

   Jonah was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Juanita Mullins; his paternal grandfather, James F. Tackett and hiscousin, Dennis Brandon Holbrook.

   Jonah grew up in Jenkins, Kentucky and was baptized in the Christian faith.  As a standout athlete at Jenkins HighSchool he excelled in basketball, football and track & field and was known for his fierce competitive spirit, sense of humor and willingness to help others.  Many knew him as someone whowould give the shirt off his back to someone in need.  In his passing, Jonah’s light continues to shine through others as an organ donor.  Working as a truck driver for Tackett Holdings,LLC, Jonah found a passion for traveling across the country.  He often texted photos and would enjoy a spontaneous FaceTime session to share the country’s beauty with his family andfriends.

     Roy was a son of the late Sam and Maybelle Branham Bentley. He served his country as a United States Air Forceveteran. He was a longtime member of the Neon American Legion, Post 104.  Roy was well known in the area as an automobile salesman. He was a fan of U.K. basketball and NASCAR.

    He is survived by two sons: Roy Bentley II of Payne Gap, Kentucky and Jerry Bentley (Nina) of Port Charlotte,Florida; seven grandchildren: Ronald, Shawn, Barry, Morgan, Sammuel, Abigail and Arianna; fourteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; along with a host of other family and manyfriends.

Katherine was amember of the Corinth Baptist Church and  the Order of Eastern Star.  She was a very compassionate and caring person, who loved her family very much. She was known affectionately as, "MommaKat", by her family and friends.

    She was a daughter of the late William Peake and Louella Justice Peake. She was also preceded in death by herhusband: Lehman Oden; one son: Duane Oden; three brothers; three sisters; a special aunt: Dee; several other aunts, uncles and cousins.

   Survivors include two daughters: Arnell Oden-Hairston of Garland, Texas and Debra Oden-Williams (LaVon) of Lexington,Kentucky; three sons: Larry Oden of Hazard, Kentucky, Michael Oden of Seattle, Washington and Kevin Calloway Oden (Sharon) of McRoberts, Kentucky; daughter-in-law: Kalawesa Oden; fourteengrandchildren: Michelle, Tonya, Lehman, Muntu, Shonequa, Delbretta, DeVonda, Tamara, Micah, Kelon, Larry, Nealy, Alexis and Katherine; twenty-one great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren;along with a host of other family and many friends to celebrate her life.

     Carl Eugene Gallion, Sr.,age 94, of Jenkins, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Whitesburg, Kentucky.  He  was born on December 20, 1923 to the late JimGallion and Mattie Mullins Gallion. He was a member of the Jenkins Christian Church for over fifty-five years.  Carl was a World War II veteran, having been wounded in the battle for AnzioBeachhead.  Carl was a member of several organizations. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and Pound VFW Post 9600. He was a member of the Jenkins Masonic Lodge #856 for over forty years. Carl was also a member of the American Legion.  He was known by most people as simply, “Jake”.

   He was preceded in death by his wife: Lucille Blizzard Gallion; grandson: Micah Shannon Gallion; great grandson: Keenon RayGallion; seven brothers and three sisters.

    Jake is survived by three sons:  Danny (Margo), Carl Jr. (Cassie), Shannon (Judy); one daughter: Carla Branham(Jack); one sister: Hazel Gallion.  He is also survived by eight grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; along with a host of other family and many friends tomourn his passing.

Mr Walker attended the NewFreedom Worship Center and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a lifelong resident of Letcher County. He served honoraby in the United States Army during the KoreanWar.

    In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife: Elizabeth Colleen Walker; one granddaughter:Kimberly Stines; two sisters: Hazel Bumgardner and Myrtle Layne; one brother: Alfred Walker.

    Josh's greatest love in life was his daughter, Annabelle. He told her often that he, "loved her more than the stars in thesky and the fish in the sea".

   Josh enjoyed being in the mountains and spending time with his family and friends.   He was a very talentedmusician. He and Matt played together in rock bands for years.  Josh loved music, artwork and playing drums.

     Earnest Charles Belcher, age 63, of Elkhorn City, Kentucky,formerly of Fleming-Neon, Kentucky, passed away, Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Mountain View Nursing Home.   He  was born on April 7, 1955 in Fleming, Kentucky.

    Earnest was a son of the late Arthur Belcher and Madeline Sparks Belcher.  He was of the Church of ChristFaith.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors, his flowers and gardening.  He was the best cook ever.  He enjoyed telling stories and spending time with the familyand friends that he loved so much.

    In addition to his parents, Earnest was also preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Clayton and Mary Sparks; two grandchildren, Lucas Everly and Loralei Belcher;  four sisters, Wanda Hudson, Verlois Isaac, Imogene Tackett and Perlie Sparks;  and two brothers, E.J. Sparks and BernardSparks.

    She was a daughter of the late Curtis and Grace Adams Madison. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband:Larry Nelson; three brothers: James Madison, Billy Madison and Morge Madison; three sisters: Emma Hogg Vanover, Claudine Little and Dorothy Adams.

   Survivors include one daughter: Michelle Barber  (Larry) of Morehead, Kentucky; one son: Justin Nelson of Neon,Kentucky; four grandchildren: Trey, Kylan, Lexi and Hannah; several very special nieces and nephews; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn her passing.

    Nettie was a long-time member of the Fleming Baptist Church and of the White Shrine of the Order of Eastern Star formany years.  She never met a stranger. She was well known for her sense of humor and bubbly personality among her friends and family. 

   Nettie was also very fond of her dog, “Cocoa”.

    In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband: David Merrell Barker; one sister: NormaDorsey “Moe”; three brothers: James Marion Ferguson, Danny Ferguson and Donnie Ferguson.

    Emma was a lifetime member of the McRoberts Missionary Baptist Church.  She was also a member of the WhiteShrine and was involved with L.K.L.P. and many other civic organizations. She was a faithful news writer and contributor to the Community News Press for over fifty years.   Emma was astaple of the McRoberts area for many years.

  Olly was a loving mother and devoted grandmother, who enjoyed spending time with her family. She also loved gardening, growingflowers and caring for her many pets.

    Minda Quillen Short, age 71, of Burdine, Kentucky passed awayWednesday, March 7, 2018 at her residence.  She was born on April 22, 1946 in Fleming, Kentucky.

    She was a daughter of the late William and Martha Wagers Quillen. She was also preceded in death by one infant son:Jeffery Michael Quillen; one grandson: David Jordan Silcox; one brother: Woodrow Quillen; three sisters: Ettie Collier, Princie Honeycutt and Marie Purlee; one daughter-in-law: Tammy Quillen; onegrandson-in-law: Kevin Mullins.

   Survivors include a former husband: Denver Short; two daughters: Melinda (Thomas) Blevins of Dalton, Georgia and Crystle(Teddy) Silcox of Beaver, Kentucky; three sons: Robert (Kimberlie) Quillen of Cynthiana, Kentucky, Keith (Kathy) Quillen of Jenkins, Kentucky and John (Lee Ann) Short of Dalton, Georgia; twobrothers: Monroe (Nancy) Quillen of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Jake Quillen of Pekin, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; a very special niece: Carol Church; two fur babies:Brownie and Baby Girl; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn her passing.

   Minda was a long-time member of the Burdine Church of God of Prophecy. She was a very dedicated mother and grandmother. Shewas truly the matriarch of her family.

   Visitation for Ms. Short will be held at the Burdine Church of God of Prophecy on Thursday, March 8, 2018 with familyviewing at 5:30 PM ; public visitation will be from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM.

Visitation will be also held at he church on Friday, March 9, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. 

   Funeral services for Ms. Short will be conducted from the church on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 1:00 PM with Pastor JeffSlone and Forest Quillen officiating.

    Melvin Carol Potter, age 69, of Jackhorn, Kentucky passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 at thePikeville Medical Center of Pikeville, Kentucky.  He was born on October 5, 1948 in Hemphill, Kentucky.

    He was a son of the late John and Rosie Tolliver Potter. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Linda Kay HallPotter; one infant son: Melvin Merle Potter; one grandson: James King; two brothers: Sam D. Potter and George Henry Potter; one sister: Reba Mae Greene.

   Survivors include four daughters: Kathy Newman (Paul) of Clintwood, Virginia, Karen Stines (Jerry) of Wise, Virginia,Melanie Collier King (Archie) of Stanville, Kentucky and Nikki Potter (Donald) of Smithfield, Pennsylavania; two sons: Tim Hall (Ann) of Premium, Kentucky and John Potter (Angie) of McRoberts,Kentucky, two sisters: Phyllis Bentley of Jackhorn, Kentucky and Betty Jo Bentley of Jackhorn, Kentucky; sixteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; along with a host of other family and manyfriends to mourn his passing.

   Melvin loved all of his grandchildren and he had a very special bond with his grandson: Draycen. He was also eagerlylooking forward to the arrival of his new great grandson: Grayden.

   Visitation for Mr. Potter will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the Hemphill Baptist Church, with family viewing at5:00 PM and public visitation from 6:00 PM to closing of the church.

    Linda Kaye Richie Hughes., age 54, of Neon, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at theAppalachian Regional Hospital of Whitesburg, Kentucky.  She was born on November 12, 1963 in Perry County, Kentucky to the late Lowin and Jacqueline Tackett Richie.

   Survivors include her husband: Dewayne Keith Hughes of Deane, Kentucky; three daughters: Crystal Hill of Whitesburg,Kentucky, Glenda Hughes of Neon, Kentucky and Robin (Josh) Pigman of Dunham, Kentucky; one brother: Ronnie Richie  of Jenkins, Kentucky; two sisters: Ollie Williams of Wise, Virginia and MonaLisa McHargue of Port St. Lucie, Florida; thirteen grandchildren; along with a host of other family and many friends.

   In addition to her parents, Linda was also preceded in death by two sisters: Kathy Potter and Brenda Richie; two brothers:Arnold Richie and Jimmy Richie.

    Peggy Sue Burke Smith “Granny”, age 58, of Jackhorn, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, February 14,2018 at the University of Kentucky Hospital of Lexington, Kentucky.  She was born on June 9, 1959 at Jenkins, Kentucky to the late Boonie and Pina Bentley Burke.

   Survivors include one son: Richard “Fudd” (Kimberly) Hall of Sergent, Kentucky; one daughter: Misty (J.D.) Griffith ofNeon, Kentucky; eight grandchildren: Skylar, Jepatha, Christian, Brody, Zack, Mason, Bella and Conner; four sisters and two brothers; along with a host of other family and many friends,

    She was also preceded in death by her infant daughter: Peggy Sue Hall; one brother: John L. Burke; two sisters:Marcella Gann and Irene Szakacs.

   Peggy was a loving mother and devoted grandmother, who loved being a “granny”. She loved to watch and cheer for hergrandchildren at sporting events. Peggy enjoyed going to yard sales and most of all, spending time  with her family and friends.

   Survivors include one son: Danny Alvin (Donna) Branham of McRoberts, Kentucky; two daughters: Carol Bartley Damron ofMcRoberts, Kentucky and Janet Bartley (Quenton) Childers of Millstone, Kentucky; son-in-law: Mark Roark of Columbus, Indiana; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild;one brother: Leonard Johnson of McRoberts, Kentucky; along with a host of other family and many friends.

    Ruby was also preceded in death by her first husband: J.E. Bartley; second husband: Hatler Branham; one daughter:Mary Bartley Roark; one grandson: Anthony Lee Childers; three brothers: Fletcher, Roy Ed and Frank Johnson; three sisters: Hazel Mullins, Ruth Mullins and Lois Muncy.

   Ruby was a charter member of the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church, which she dearly loved.

    Fred Young, age 82, of Neon, Kentucky passed from this life onTuesday, January 30 , 2018 at the Pikeville Medical Center of Pikeville, Kentucky.  He was born on December 12, 1935 in Letcher County, Kentucky to the late Ike and MillieYoung.

   Fred is survived by two sons: Ronald D. (Doris) Young of McCarr, Kentucky and Mark (Deborah) Young of McRoberts, Kentucky;six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; along with a host of other family and many friends.

    He was also preceded in death by his wife: Mary Ann Young; four brothers: Elbert Young, Elmer Young, Ike Young, Jr. andClaude Young; one sister: Callie Young.

    Fred was a lifelong resident of Letcher County, Kentucky and he was a Deacon of the Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Churchfor many years.

  Survivors include four sons: George (Ruth) Yonts of Goose Creek, Kentucky, Charles (Jenny Lynn) Yonts of Billmoore Branch,Kentucky, Jimmy (Jeanette) Yonts of Thornton, Kentucky and Eugene (Lindy) Yonts of Goose Creek, Kentucky; one brother: Carlos Mullins of Louisville, Kentucky; one sister: Freidas (Don) Bailey ofHaymond, Kentucky; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; along with a host of other family and many friends,

   She was also preceded in death by her husband: Dawes Yonts; two infant sons: Clyde and Claude Yonts; two brothers: Loyleand Hassel Mullins; two sisters: Vonda McCown and Lackey Mullins.

   Evelyn was a long-time member of the Hemphill Church of Christ. She loved to sew and was a wonderful mother, who took greatcare of her family.

     Karleigh Michelle Bates, age 2 years, 3months and 2 days, of Haymond, Kentucky passed fromthis life on Wednesday, January 24 , 2018.

   Karleigh is survived by her parents: Anthony and Courtney Bates of Haymond; two brothers: Hayden Fulton of Millstone andBlake Bates of Sergent; one sister: Mia Bates of Sergent; grandparents: Nettie Bentley of Rutledge, Tennessee, Jeffery Reach of West Blocton, Alabama and Buddy & Melissa Bates of Sergent; greatgrandparents: Jimmie Reach of West Blocton, Alabama and Judy Boggs of Thornton; along with a host of other special family and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her aunt Bridget Mullins.

  Harold “Lucky” Cantrell., age 70, of Fleming-Neon, Kentucky passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at hishome.  He was born on July 15, 1947, in Fleming, Kentucky and lived most of his life in his hometown.

    He was a son of the late Woodrow and Bessie Isabell Cantrell. He was also preceded in death by three sisters:Margaret Ann Kincer, Mable Kincer and Aubrey Franklin; three brothers: Robert, Ernie and Randy Cantrell.

   Survivors include his wife: Linda Cantrell of Fleming-Neon, Kentucky; four children: Shelly Cantrell (Travis) Mullins ofFleming-Neon, Kentucky, Michael Cantrell of Fleming-Neon, Kentucky, Kelly Wayne (Janie) Cantrell of Falmouth, Kentucky and Travis (Kimmi) Cantrell of Lexington, Kentucky; four grandsons: Shawn,Christopher, Andru and Keaton; one granddaughter: Nakesha; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Brenda Bevins of Jenkins, Kentucky and Betty (Ernie) York of Pineville, Kentucky; along with a hostof other relatives and friends, who mourn his passing.

   Matthew Edward Thacker, age 29, of Jenkins, Kentucky passed fromthis life on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Pikeville Medical Center of Pikeville, Kentucky.  He was born on June 12, 1988 at Mary Washington Hospital. He spent his youth bouncing states andsettling in Jenkins, where he built his life and his family.  He made his living in customer service, bringing joy and laughter to all he met. He was a joker at heart and never failed to lightenyour spirit. He was an all around athlete and loved sports; whether he was playing them or watching and rooting on his children, as they played them. He was well known and truly loved. His greatestaccomplishment was his kids. They were his light and his everything. He was a proud papa.

   He was the son of Eddie and Sheila Thacker; the father of Ryan Scott Church, Haylee Dawn Thacker and Landon Matthew LeeThacker; the brother of Jesse Thacker (Elizabeth Smith), Louie Thacker, Carla (Nathaniel) Polly and Crystal Mullins; the uncle of Donovan Brown.  He was also family and a dear friend to all whoknew him.

   Viola Williams, age 87, of Jenkins, Kentucky passed from this lifeon Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the Letcher Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Whitesburg, Kentucky.  She was born on January 18, 1931 at Marshall’s Branch, Kentucky to the late EmitHassel Johnson and Bessie Johnson.  Viola  taught school at Marshall’s Branch and worked as a nurse-aid at Jenkins Hospital. Mrs. Williams worked two years in coal mining.  Sheattended the Peak’s Branch Missionary Alliance Church and the Whitesburg First Baptist Church.

  She was also preceded in death by her husband: Arnold Edward Williams; one infant son: Arnold E. Williams, Jr.; three brothers:Homer Johnson, Guy Johnson and Arlie B. Johnson; two sisters: Glaidus Hyatt and Lucille Bentley.

   Mrs. Williams is survived by one daughter: Rita (Kenneth) Broome of Whitesburg, Kentucky; three sons: Melvin Douglas(Della) Williams of Banner, Kentucky, Daniel Ray (Deborah) Williams of Robinson Creek, Kentucky and Edward Dale (Carla) Williams of Paintsville, Kentucky; six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren: along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn her passing.

    Clarence Dotson, Jr., age 91, of Jenkins, Kentucky passed fromthis life on Monday, January 22, 2018 at his residence.  He was born on January 20, 1927 at Jenkins, Kentucky to the late Clarence E. Dotson and Hattie Ellen Taylor Dotson. Mr. Dotson served inthe United States Army during W.W. II.  He was a member of both the Pound VFW # 9600 and the Jenkins American Legion.He was a sixty year Master Mason of Jenkins Lodge #856.

  Clarence was also preceded in death by his loving wife: Allois Evanoff Dotson; one son: Clarence Gregory Dotson; one greatgrandson: Evan Edwards Carter; one brother: Cecil Alvis Dotson; one sister: Leatha Mae Branham Vinson and one special aunt: Pearl Taylor Baine.

  Mr. Dotson is survived by four daughters: LaDonna (P.D.) Motley of Wichester, Kentucky, Toni Ann (Victor) Carter of Frenchburg,Kentucky, Angela Gail (Arch) Johnson of Booneville, Kentucky and Jacqueline Maria Dotson of Jenkins, Kentucky; two dear double first-cousins: Carlisle Taylor and Gary Taylor; special nieces andnephews: Greta, Gilda and Michael Branham; eleven  grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren: along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn his passing. 

    Visitation for Mr. Dotson will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the People's Fundamental Baptist Church of Dunham,KY..  Family viewing will be at 5:00 PM.  The family will receive friends and guests from 6:00 PM.  Masonic rites will be observed.

    Funeral services will be conducted from the church on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Van Webbofficiating.

    Burial will take place at the Dotson Cemetery located at Pound, Virginia.

 

    Jacob “Pat” Johnson, age 79, of Jackhorn, Kentucky passed from this life on Wednesday, January 3,2018 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital of Whitesburg, Kentucky.  He was born on November 7, 1938 at Etty, Kentucky to the late Jacob Johnson, Sr. and Fran Simone Riddle Johnson. Pat was amember of the Neon Masonic Lodge #884 and of the Neon American Legion. He was an United States Army Veteran and retired coal miner of over forty years experience. He was also a self-employed businessowner.  Pat enjoyed collecting coins, trading guns, cutting grass and riding four-wheelers.

   He was also preceded in death by four brothers: Challie Johnson, William Danny Johnson, Scotty Johnson and Mike Johnson;one nephew: Ora Shawn Johnson.

   Mr. Johnson is survived by four nephews: Shane (Samantha) Johnson of Neon, Kentucky(whom Pat loved like a son), Jacob ShanJohnson of Seco, Kentucky, Chad Johnson of Bean Station, Tennessee and Michael Johnson of Tennessee; one niece: Jessica Shyann (Chris) Duty of Neon, Kentucky; two sisters-in law:  Deloris“P-Jib” Johnson of Neon, Kentucky and Charlene Johnson of Bean Station, Tennessee; along with a host of other family and many friends to mourn his passing.  

     Visitation for Mr. Johnson will be held at the Carty Funeral Home of Neon, Kentucky on Saturday, January 6, 2018, withfamily viewing at 5:00 PM.  The family will then welcome and receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
